Win Son Bakery & Cafe, East Village
I discovered Win Son when I had a couple of listings near the original location in East Williamsburg. I was wowed by the all-day cafe's inventive mashups of Taiwanese and American classics, even if I was almost never able to snag a table (lots of very cool looking young people seem to linger over laptops there). When Win Son recently opened a second location in the East Village, just seven minutes away from home via CitiBike, I was pretty psyched.
Last week I headed over for a late breakfast. I had to order my favorite - a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich served in a scallion pancake instead of a traditional roll or wrap (above). The chili aoli that comes on the side provides a perfect little jolt of spice and creaminess. Along with a strong cold brew and a Red Date Cake (not overly sweet, very date-forward), it was a memorable weekday treat. And I even had a table to myself!
