Edith's Sandwich Counter, West Village
Edith's Sandwich Counter began in Brooklyn as a pandemic pop-up during the spring of 2020. Their menu of new-age and historically-inspired Jewish cuisine was was so popular that a permanent location in Williamsburg followed. Now Edith's is in the West Village, serving breakfast and lunch seven days a week. I stopped in yesterday for a late breakfast.
I ordered a tasty Iced Cafe Slushie (frozen cold brew with iced oat milk and tahini) and a BEC&L. That's a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich wrapped in a latke. It was recently named "One of the Sandwiches That Defines NYC" by the NY Times.
Breakfast sandwiches wrapped in something other than a tortilla are clearly a "thing." You may remember that I recently had one wrapped in a scallion pancake at Win Son Bakery. It's a "thing" I can get behind. Both the sandwich and the slushie were delicious. Next time I may get it with a side of Totkes (Tater Tot inspired mini latkes). Also on my radar for another visit: the Pastrami Chopped Cheese sandwich, a Jewish deli/bodega mashup that somehow makes perfect sense.
