Chez Ma Tante, Greenpoint
The trek was worth it. Ralph and I had heard good things about Chez Ma Tante, a European-style corner bistro in Greenpoint. When friends suggested brunch there, we happily agreed. A short trip on the L train and a twenty minute walk later, we arrived to a buzzy room filled with young Brooklynites in barrel jeans and oversized cropped sweaters, enjoying what looked like some delicious plates of food.
Our friends had reserved a table outside, where it's a bit quieter and easier to talk. We sat under very effective heat lamps, watched the passing parade, and played with the golden retriever at the next table.
So how was the food? Outstanding. Definitely order the Biscuit and Sausage Gravy with Sunny Egg. Get the Chips and Aioli and an order of the fluffy, crisp-edged Lemon-Ricotta Pancakes for the table (which everyone there seemed to be doing). If you're not put off by the idea of a Pig's Head Terrine (I'm not), it's fabulous.
After brunch, we walked back to Bedford Avenue L station and stopped at Martha's Country Bakery for a couple of slices of Pistachio Tres Leches Cake to take home. The diet starts Jan. 2.
